Maritime pine tree and cone - Pinus pinaster Aiton

Description

The environment of the Tocchi Reserve is typical of the Tuscan hill, with irregular orography and gentle reliefs furrowed by short streams that flow into the Vermiglione stream, the Macinaio ditch and the Lame Buie ditch. More than half of the area is covered with maritime pine woods, with undergrowth formed by xerophilous vegetation (Ericacee, common juniper, phyllirea and strawberry tree).
In small areas the pure pine forest is almost completely replaced by formations of various broad-leaved trees, such as lorniello, chestnut, black hornbeam, Turkey oak, downy oak, hazel. The holm oak is found massively only in one area, in loc. Ferraia, in association with strawberry tree, phyllirea, myrtle and cork oak. Along the ditch Balze there are specimens of beech, which here constitute an interesting glacial relict. Site of significant importance for the conservation of the otter, the presence of which has been reported at least until 1992. Many mammals, including marten, wild cat, wild boar, roe deer, listress, badger, badger, fox. Among the birds, we find the short-toed eagle, the honey buzzard, the sparrow hawk, the buzzard, lassiolo, the wood pigeon, the nightjar, the stiff neck, the green woodpecker, the cappellaccia, the tottavilla, the dipper, the tordela, the magnanine, the black tit, the oriole, laverla piccola, laverla capirossa and the black kite (reintroduced).
