Denomination recognition: 2010.
Leonforte late fishing, called La Settembrina, is grown in the municipalities of Leonforte, Enna, Calascibetta, Nissoria Assoro and Agira, in the province of Enna on a surface of about 200 Ha.
The characteristic that distinguishes Leonforte Peach from its "competitors" is the ripening period: September. How is this possible, will you ask yourself? Simple: peaches are "stuffed". The process was "patented" in the 1960s by a certain Pappalardo from Acireale who tried to remedy the damage caused by parasites. The first peach orchards were born in Leonforte in the 1950s on the clayey soils of the Contrada Noce, but after just four years the cultivation was abandoned due to the Mediterranean fly. The remedy arrives a few years later: the parchment paper bag in which the fruits are wrapped 120-150 days before complete ripening, protects the peaches from pests and bad weather and avoids the excessive use of industrial fertilizers. The practice spread rapidly and thus the Leonforte fishing history begins again.

The seedlings allowed are bare root or seedlings in phytocell, and must be of good agronomic and sanitary quality, and a maximum age of 1 year. The marzeda to be used must come from healthy mother plants from a phytosanitary point of view, selected within plants falling in the municipalities referred to in art. 3, for the payment of the "Pesca di Leonforte".
Planting of plants must necessarily take place in the autumn-winter period for those with bare roots; the seedlings in phytocell can be implanted in the same period or even in spring, in the presence of soil moisture sufficient to avoid possible transplant stress. The seedlings are irrigated as soon as they are planted.
Plant management systems.
The operating systems of the I.G.P. "Leonforte peach", sonoriconducibili to ancient production techniques, consolidated by tradition, take into consideration the prerogatives of the quadrinomial consisting of the type of peach cultivard, soil, climate and man. Cultivation must be carried out with the following methods:
- conventional, in use in the area, with compliance with the rules of "Good Agricultural Practice" of the Sicilian Region;
- integrated, obtained in compliance with the "Technical Standards" foreseen by the disciplinary of the Sicilian Region;
- organic, according to Reg. (CE) 834/2007 and subsequent amendments and additions.
Form of breeding
The training system must ensure adequate exposure to sunlight in all parts of the canopy, provide quality fruits, encourage uniform distribution of pesticide products and facilitate cultivation operations such as pruning, thinning, bagging and fruit picking.
The training systems and the allowed planting distances are:
- Simple vase or delayed vase: m 4-4.5 x 4.5-5;
- Tatura Trellis or transversal Y: m 5 x 2;
- Fusetto: m 4.5-5 x 2.
The planting density is between 400 and 1,100 plants per hectare depending on the type of training system adopted, it being understood that in any case the maximum production per hectare must not exceed 20 tons.
Both winter and summer pruning is allowed, to be carried out annually according to the icons suggested by the technique. The thinning must be carried out before the bagging of the fruits and in any case not later than the month of May.
The use of a parchment paper bag for the mechanical defense of pathogenic agents is mandatory, to be implemented in the phase in which the drupe reaches the size of unanoce and, in any case, not later than the month of July.
In plants in the breeding phase, the quantities of fertilizers must be reduced proportionally, locating them near the root system of the plants.
The use of manure and other organic fertilizers must be privileged. Fertirrigation and foliar fertilization practices are allowed.
Nitrogen inputs higher than 150 kg per hectare are not allowed.
Drip or sprinkler irrigation techniques are allowed. Overhead irrigation systems are not allowed.
Harvesting takes place from the first ten days of September until the first ten days of November. The degree of maturation of the product must be such as to allow processing, transport and related operations; allow good conservation up to the place of destination; respond to the commercial needs of the place of destination.
The drupes must be harvested by hand, avoiding the operation during the hottest hours of the day and direct exposure to the sun of the collected fruits. Particular care must be given to the separation of the fruit from the branch which must take place without causing damage to the peduncle. In addition, the iron wire, which is used to tie the parchment bags, must be removed, in order to avoid damage to the fruits deposited in the boxes or in other containers.
Refrigeration of the product in cold rooms at temperatures between 0.5 ° C and 4.5 ° C is allowed for a maximum period of 20 days.
The conditioning operations of the IGP Pesca di Leonforte must take place within the production area defined in article 3 of this specification to prevent transport and excessive handling from causing contamination and bruising of the fruits with consequent attack by mold and pathogens that would compromise the qualitative characteristics of the product.
The request for recognition of the I.G.P. "Leonforte peach" is justified by the reputation and reputation of the product known for its quality characteristics such as late ripening and consequently the presence on the market in the period in which peaches are almost absent, the hardness and the practicality of bagging. The bagging of the fruits on the plants with silver parchment bags allows the control of the Mediterranean fly (Ceratitiscapitata). Over time, this particularity has represented one of the most qualifying aspects of this production. Fundamental is the work of the fish farmer who has become the manager of his own productions because he has understood that he has a unique product in his hands. He often involved his family in bagging by working hard day and night. The sale of peaches has ensured an income that improves the living conditions of the operators in the area.
For about twenty years the "Pesca di Leonforte" has been moving a significant economic supply not only in the production area, but also in the territory of the neighboring municipalities on the occasion of the annual festival held on the first Sunday of the month of October in the historic center of the town built by the Prince Nicolò Placido Branciforti in the 17th century. This moment of promotion and enhancement of the product was created in 1982 by the municipal administration of the time to encourage the development of stone fruit and to make consumers of the island aware of the peculiarities of a single product. The event, born as "Leonforte's peach festival" and renamed "Leonforte's peach and typical products festival", has meant since its origins a moment of promotion of this late product.
The control on the conformity of the product to the specification is carried out, by a control structure, in accordance with the provisions of articles 10 and 11 of Reg. (CE) n.510 / 2006. This structure is the Control Body DNV Italy - Centrooni Direzionale - Palazzo Sirio 2 - Agrate Brianza (MI) - tel. +39.039.6899905 - fax. +39.039.6899930.
