Origin and diffusion

The chèvre des Fossés (goat of the ditches) is the common goat of north-western France. The breed was only recognized in 2005, following the discovery of a herd that had gone wild near La Hague in the early 1990s. There is hardly any trace of its existence in the zootechnical literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Association de Sauvegarde et de Promotion de la Chèvre des Fossés was created in 2008.

Morphological and productive characteristics

Rustic and docile, medium-small in size with light bones and of various colors, it is particularly suitable for the oceanic climate of Brittany and Normandy.
It was mainly used for milk, sometimes transformed into cheese.
